NSSF Helps Recruit Action Shooters for Olympics

A major effort is underway to enhance America’s chances in the Olympic Rapid Fire Pistol event by recruiting top American shooters from the ranks of action shooting competitors. USA Shooting and NSSF are working to introduce the Olympic event to athletes who compete in such popular action shooting disciplines as IPSC, IDPA, Cowboy Action and NRA Action Shooting with the idea that the shared challenges posed by multiple targets, rapid fire and fixed time limits offer both a natural cross-over and a logical progression for action shooters to try the Olympic discipline. Americans currently dominate in the action shooting sports at the international level, and it is hoped that these athletes will prove a fertile recruitment ground for America’s Olympic shooting team. The recruitment effort includes an invitation-only orientation and training camp Nov. 29-Dec.2 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for a number of the nation’s best action shooting athletes, including Rod Leatham, Jerry Barnhart, Todd Jarrett, Doug Koenig, Michael Voigt, Bruce Piatt, John Pride, Mickey Fowler, Mike Dalton, Frank Garcia, Jerry Miculek, Matt Burkett, Don Golembieski and Richard “Tequila” Young. Based on the outcome of the initial Project Rapid Action Camp, a similar event for top-level women in the action shooting sports may be held to introduce them to the Olympic Women’s Sport Pistol competition.
