Senate Airline Security Bill Allows Pilots to be Armed

The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved a new aviation security bill that includes a provision to allow commercial airline pilots to keep guns in the plane’s cockpit. The bill also requires federal, state or local governments to take over baggage screening and handling, and authorizes armed federal marshals on all flights. The provision to arm pilots would be subject to their undergoing approved training and their firearms being approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. The House of Representatives is expected to consider its own airline security measures with members of both parties reportedly opposed to a government takeover of baggage screening, as well as to arming pilots.
