Air Rifles Target of Possible CPSC Recall

The head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission is reportedly behind a possible nationwide recall of millions of BB guns. CPSC Chairman Ann Brown is apparently pushing for the recall specifically of some 9 million Daisy high-velocity models, but such an action could lead to an even wider recall of as many as 100 million air rifles currently in circulation and made by all manufacturers. Despite having reviewed air guns on numerous occasions and concluding they were safe and not defective, the CPSC, under Brown’s urging, is now expressing concerns about the gravity-loading features and absence of so-called “automatic safety” mechanisms on the guns. What the CPSC is looking at “is not unique to the Daisy product or to high-velocity rifles” but “pertains to virtually every single air rifle ever made,” said Lawrence G. Keane, vice president and general counsel to NSSF. The CPSC’s three commissioners are scheduled to consider the issue privately and vote on the possible recall Oct. 30, the day before Brown, who was appointed in1994 by President Bill Clinton, steps down as chairman. There is no word yet as to whether the other two commissioners, one a Democrat and the other a Republican, support the recall effort.
