Summary:The SportDOG SD-400 is a very excellent product. It is sturdy and can be used in water. I bought this around a year ago and so far, I have no regrets. You can use it with most dogs since it has a wide variety of settings for you to choose from. I’m impressed with how long the battery can operate. That’s about 7-14 days on normal use before you have to recharge it. My dog’s behavior significantly got better when we started using this product. She was a totally new dog and the change happened just after a few hours of using the SD-400! Now we can go on walks and I don’t have to worry about her wandering off chasing a kitten or a car. And we do this now without leash. I was hesitant to use the correction on her at first so I tried it on myself before letting her use it. I was able to reach the 4th level and I’m telling you, it’s not painful at all. It’s more of a discomfort. It’s like feeling someone knocking your elbow or feeling pins and needles. For my dog, I’ve been using level 3 almost always. My first unit though bogged down after a few weeks but SportDOG replaced it with a new unit for free. Impressive customer service! So far, I have no problems with the new unit. I would have loved this product even more if it had a vibrate mode. I’m not a believer of the beep mode since I think dogs tend to get used to it. The vibrate mode would have been more effective. That’s why I’m knocking 1 star off from my rating.
Pros:Excellent product, Waterproof, Tone mode, Replacement

Functional mid-level collar

Summary:This product is a mid-level collar which I think performs better than the Innotek and PetSafe. However, I think TriTronics is better than the SD-400. The range is good enough. Its transmitter and sleek and very handy and gives you the results you want. It comes with an instructional DVD which I find to be very helpful. In my opinion, the correction on this product is a bit stronger than with the TriTronics. So if your dog is quite the stubborn one, this will come very handy. There’s only one charger for the transmitter and receiver. An indicator light is added to tell you when charging is complete. The unit is sturdy and it looks like it can withstand any environment. I really haven’t tried using it on water but it looks waterproof.

Summary:I’ve been using SportDOG for as long as I can remember. The first SportDOG I used lasted eight years. Since it had a “lifetime warranty”, I got in touch with them when it finally gave out. Sadly, they have stopped its production so the warranty is no longer valid. So I tried to search for a good replacement for my old SportDOG. I was hesitant at first since their new products only have limited lifetime warranty. I really needed a replacement so I bought the SportDOG SD-400 nonetheless (since it was the only want that is within budget). The SD-400 has less range than my first SportDOG but it’s not much of a problem now since my dog doesn’t move around that much now that he’s older. We’ve been using it a lot on the beach and I haven’t experienced any problems with the saltwater. I just rinse it off every after use. I really like the improvements made on the SD-400 especially the 3 buttons which includes a beep only mode. My dog responds to this almost all the time. It’s also nice that the charger charges both the transmitter and receiver. My first SportDOG doesn’t do this. Currently, we don’t use it that much. I’m just really hoping that the unit would last long enough.

Excellent collar…lousy battery

Summary:I bought this product because our dog is a tad too stubborn. I was really amazed with the results for the first few weeks we used it. However, the batteries in the receiver seemed to be not working well. We can only use it for maybe a day then we have to recharge it. So now, we can’t use the product for a long time since we have to recharge it frequently. It’s really frustrating. I’m a bit confused since a lot of reviews said that the product could last at least a week. How I wish we can also use our unit for that long. We don’t even use the correction since our dog responds well to the beep. I’m guessing the battery in our unit is defective. I’m thinking of giving SportDOG a call and request for a replacement.
Pros:Amazing results, Bad batteries

Money down the drain!

Summary:I own a black lab service dog which I’ve just recently acquired (I need the dog since I’m disabled). I needed to train it first so I bought a SportDOG SD-400 collar. For the first 8 weeks of training, everything went well. Then all of a sudden, the unit just won’t operate. Everything has been charged as required and all the indicator lights are okay. But the unit still doesn’t give me anything. SportDOG hasn’t been much of a help. They seem to be too busy to respond to my concerns.
Pros:Device won’t operate
