Pheasant Hunting with Shelby (Pudelpointer)

This hunt took place at Pine Ridge Hunting Preserve in Sunderland Ontario December 2009. Shelby worked very well and made an amazing track and retrieve on a crippled pheasant that dropped in a swamp. Being convinced that the bird was dead and submerged in ice and water, we searched for it for a substantial amount of time . I noticed that she kept straying away from the swamp but I commanded her back to where I saw the bird drop. After a few times of her straying, I let her out of the swamp and she found the crippled bird approx. 20 yards away! I learned that it is best sometimes to just let the dog work and let them do what they were bred to do! I have owned three Pudelpointers and I swear by them! They are hard working, intelligent, versatile, passionate dogs that make excellent gun dogs as well as family pets.
