0:47 You know, there's lots of ways to teach a dog to quarter and actually work for upland game birds. A lot of them might include having birds planted out in the field, having two or three guys walking in a line while you walk in between and have them plant birds as you go down.

Now, the spring spaniel community uses that a lot, a great technique. But how about something that you can do on your own and do it in the backyard as well? This is a little drill that we've set up, once again goes with our platform training. And we're going to get our dog to move from one platform to the next. I'm going to go and I'm going to get him to shift from left to right, right to left, left to right.

Now, at this point in time, he's just going from one platform to the next. When I get to the end platform, I'll turn around and I'm going to work my way back. This is as much getting your dog working right and left as it is getting your dog to work away from you. Let's work on it and see how it goes.

1:40 Right. Good job. Right. Here, here. Good. Good job. Place. Good job.

2:01 Place. Place. Place. Place.

2:16 Now, you see we have our dog moving and he's actually
taking those directions quite well. Keep in mind this is a short course we're doing right here and it's in the wide open. We can actually start moving this out wider and wider and wider. So when you get in the field and you actually start putting  birds out, your dog knows to be working away from you but also to be moving with your body and your hand at the same time. You do this little drill and stay with it, you're going to have a dog that's going to know how to hunt in the uplands.
