0:40 Today I want to talk to you about how we're going to
get this puppy ready for shot and how we're going to get him ready for the
field for shooting birds over him.
in the distance hey, woo! 0:49 (gunshot)
0:51 Fetch.
0:52 Step one of what we're going to do is we're going to
throw this dummy out. We have a thrower out about 40, 50 yards. She's going to
throw the bird in the air with no shot. We're going to let the dog retrieve and
loosen up.
1:09 in the distance
Hey!
1:13 Fetch.
1:38 Step two. We'll throw this time and have a shot and see
how the dog reacts to the shot and go from there.
1:48 in the distance
Hey.
1:51 (gunshot)
1:55 Fetch.
2:19 Now that the dog hasn't reacted that bad to the shot,
our next step will be to move closer to the thrower and the gunshot closer.
Come on. Stop.
2:36 in the distance Hey. Whoop!
2:39 (gunshot)
2:42 Fetch.
2:44 Okay, now that we watched the dog, there's no reaction
that is something I'm worried about. The dog seems to handle the shot. I'm
going to move the thrower closer and see how the dog reacts to that.
3:00 in the distance Hey.
3:03 (gunshot)
3:04 Fetch.
3:07 Now, I've watched the dog's reaction. There's nothing
there that worries me. I'm going to move her up a little closer.
3:13 in the distance Hey, hey! Hey!
3:16 (gunshot)
3:19 Fetch.
3:27 Okay the next step- we'll move her up a little closer
and be right next to us and see how the dog reacts to that. You have to watch
the dog's reaction. If he gets a little jumping and you're a little worried
about it, stay your ground. 3:42 (gunshot)
3:44 Fetch.
3:49 The main thing you want to look at with the dog when
you're introducing them to gun is how the dog is going to react. This dog went
through this very fast. (gunshot) Some dogs are going to take a little more
time because they're a little sensitive to the gun. If they are, don't move
them forward or move the gun closer to you. Stay your distance. Training takes
time. It's not something you can do overnight. And it's repetition, over and
over and over. That's the biggest thing you want to do is put your reps in with
your dog.
