0:37 One of the most important things of training the English Springer Spaniel  is putting them on birds. The biggest thing you want to learn how to do is carrying them like this. I put my hand in their leg and under their wing. That keeps them from moving. Or I can tuck them and carry them this way. Now if I want to plant, it depends on the bird. If I have a real strong bird, I'll tuck its head, put it under, lay it down. In a minute when its feet relax, I let go.

Now I can walk away, away from the bird.

1:19 Another way if I don't think the bird's very strong, I'll tip their head, put them on their back, wait for them to relax and walk away.

Another way is what we call choking. I grab it by the neck, hold it like this. This is how I get runners or moving birds. And then drop the bird in.

1:58 And the bird will take off running, usually, nine times out of ten. And see, he's coming out of it. He's fine. Sometimes they'll flap.  When they flap, that's when you want to do it.

2:10 That's some of the tips I can give you on planting birds. Birds are going to fly away on you. The more you plant, the better you're going to get. Those are some of the techniques you can use. I'm Gary Breitbarth from G&D Kennels and Gundogs Online.
