Garmin Delta - Review

Summary:Have owned 5 other brands over the years. Initially for bird dog training and now for IPO training. Bought the two dog for walks and use the collars individually while training. Collars have changed a lot over the years and how I use the collar for IPO is very different to how I used a collar with bird dogs so requirements are diffferent. I traded in another brand for the Garmin because of a poorly designed intensity level dial which made changing levels difficult so useless in training situations where timing is imperative. PROS Digital display makes it easy to see: which dog I'm on when we are walks; what intensity level I'm on, if the transmitter is ON or OFF and which options (T, V, C, M) are set. The side button set up makes it easy to change intensity levels, change dogs and change options. Most importantly each dog can be set at a different intensity level. The stim buttons are easy to identify by touch CONS and these outweigh all the PROS 1) Not enough intensity level range 2) Lowest level #1 is TOO high for my Belgian Malinois 3) Stim levels are too drastic from one level to the next; need more smaller increments 4) The transmitter is too bulky when trying to manage it and a clicker in one hand and either a leash, or a bite sleeve and/or a latigo in the other WHen I called Garmin about the stim level problem, they effectively tried to tell me I didn't know what I was talking about. Tritronics used to be the Cadillac of collars and I attended several of their great seminars over the years so very disappointed in their support. I have been borrowing a double receiver Dogtra with great stim level range and will be switching to one of those as soon as I sell my Garmin. I've stuck with Gun Dog Supply over the years because of their great service even though I don't work with Gun Dogs any more.

Summary:Does not work well on my Brittany. Have had it over a year and it does not have the power to get the dogs attention unless it is at 17 or 18 and only if we are fairly close together. Have spoken to Garmin several times on the unit and only advice I was given was to place it off center and up higher. I did that..then I lowered it down much further and that seems to work better but it still doesn't perform to the power level of a Tri Tronics (owned by Garmin). Garmin sent a replacement battery last week and it won't even plug in! Dismayed at the performance but am still trying to work with Garmin on the unit.
Pros:Great design, easy to use even with gloves on. Decent price Fit is great otherwise
Cons: Does not have the power performance of Tri Tronics brand owned by Garmin. Dismayed at performance.

Summary:Garmin Delta. I agree 100% with the only review written. I waited for months for Garmin to release this unit and found the same thing. My Brittany did not even notic unless it was up to 17. I can keep his attention at 16 now but nothing lower. I had the same experience with Garmin and the replacement battery. It would not work with the new battery. The power level is totally wimpy for Brits. My hunting partners has the Tritronics and he has to keep in at 2.
Pros:Great design. Holds a charge for a long time, easy to understand. Solid construction.
Cons:Not enough power to be effective for a bull headed dog..even at 18, which is as high as it goes.
