Force Fetch
by: Amy Dahl, Ph.D.

Force Fetching Retrievers is difficult, especially when you lack experience. When a dog does not respond, do you need to apply more pressure, less pressure, ease up on requirements, shorten the session, or perhaps bear down and keep trying until he gets it? Even experienced trainers can find it hard to read a dog that is doing nothing. (Read...)

The Channel Concept - Retriever
Begin with your dog sitting near the edge of the water at the end of a channel. Throw a bumper that lands in water just a few feet away so that the dog will not be tempted to run the bank. Then send the dog to make the retrieve. When it returns, immediately throw the bumper 30 feet down the channel and send the dog. (Read...)

Establishing a Solid Quartering Pattern - An Interview with David Lauber
by: Geoffrey A. English

Last issue we spent time talking with David Lauber, regarding the introduction of young dogs to gunfire during fieldwork. This issue we will continue our talk, but step back a bit and talk about establishing a strong quartering pattern before shooting over the dog and eventually steadying a young spaniel. (Read...)

Southern Doves, A Legacy of Tradition
by: R. Michael DiLullo

The breeze woke me from my semi-sleep-like state. The heat was beginning to dissipate, although, the sun was still high in the late afternoon sky. Through the shimmering mirage-like waves, I could see two camo-clad hunters taking-up their position across the field. My two female English Springer Spaniels “Bess” and “Flo,” lying one on each side, had managed to find what limited shade was available. I leaned back against the roll of hay and checked my watch. It was nearly 4 p.m., the magic hour was approaching, the sky would soon be full of doves. I would have plenty of targets and the dogs, hopefully would have birds to retrieve.

What in the World is the Tri-Tronics G2 EXP?
by: Geoffrey A. English

Tri-Tronics has done it again… Yes, they changed their collars twice in less than a year. Just when you thought a good thing couldn’t get any better.

Well, let me walk you through the series of changes that have occurred with the new Tri-Tronics G2 EXP line. Simply put, not much has changed for the guy looking for a single dog unit. In fact, if you are one of those guys who says, “I will never have the need to run more than one dog at a time.” Well, then the EXP model is not for you. In fact, Tri-Tronics has made the decision to keep the standard G2 models available – but only in the one dog versions.

$64K Question - George Hickox
by: George Hickox

Put a pack of gundog owners together, and odds are that conversation will be wholly focused on training, hunting and bragging. Throughout my years of involvement in such talks at lodges, camps and our gundog training schools, people have asked me the gamut of dog questions. They've ranged from, "How do I get my beagle to point with style?" (to which my answer was, "I don't know") to "My dog is four years old. Is she too old to train?" Following are some of the more frequently posed queries and my thoughts on each. (Read...)

The Modern History of the 16 Gauge
by: Bill Hanus

A modern history of the 16 gauge begins here ... with the story of how Bill Hicks & Co. brought an all new Browning 16 gauge over/under back to American birdgunners.

The Browning Story
Several years ago, Bill Hicks & Co. brought back the 16 gauge Browning in two production runs, totaling 1,500 over/unders. They were "non-catalog" guns made (but not sold) by Browning.
