NWTF Gives $100,000 to Open Doors for Youth Hunters and Their Families

NEWTOWN, Conn.—Long established as a leader in protecting America’s hunting traditions and firearms freedoms, the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has underscored that commitment with a $100,000 boost for a program to enhance family hunting opportunities across the country.

NWTF made the contribution to the Hunting & Shooting Sports Heritage Fund in the name of a program called “Families Afield.”

Originally known by its working title (Start ‘Em Young), the program’s three founding partners—NWTF, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, and National Shooting Sports Foundation—recently adopted the name “Families Afield” to better reflect the program’s vision and ultimate goal.

Currently, 22 states are classified as “overly restrictive” in regulating youths who are interested in hunting. In one northeastern state, for example, youngsters cannot legally join their parents for a deer hunt until they reach age 16.

“By working with states to review and hopefully eliminate unnecessary age restrictions, ’Familes Afield’ will help more parents enjoy hunting with their sons and daughters. Statistics show that adult-supervised young hunters have a proven safety record. And youths who start hunting early in life are more likely to hunt as adults. With all these positive outcomes, why would hunters allow age restrictions to continue inhibiting the future of their sport?” said Rob Keck, NWTF CEO.

Keck, along with NWTF President Jere Peak and Chairman Dr. Robert Dettmer, presented the $100,000 check during NWTF’s recent national convention in Nashville.

Over the past five years, NWTF has contributed well over $1 million to the organization, which is the firearm industry’s political and legal action committee. The Hunting & Shooting Sports Heritage Fund is affiliated with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).

“We are proud to have a great partner like NWTF standing beside us on the front lines for hunting traditions and firearm freedoms," said David Miles, NSSF director of promotions and advertising. "For sportsmen, NWTF is doing all the right things.”
