Proposed Ban On Select Firearms Awaits Vote

An Illinois House bill that could be voted on as early as this week would prohibit the sale and manufacture of a number of semi-automatic firearms and .50-caliber rifles. Firearms retailers in Illinois are encouraged to contact their state representatives and urge them to oppose HB 2414. Shooters Rally For St. Jude

It was a magic moment Thursday near the end of a two-day radiothon to raise money for children's cancer treatment and research. Outdoor writer Mike Roberts, representing the Shooting Sportsmen of Connecticut, made an on-air $20,000 gift and matching challenge to gun owners.

Project ChildSafe A Persistent Reminder

The National Safety Council's "Injury Facts 2005-2006" indicates a national decline in accidental firearm-related fatalities, a change that could be largely credited to an increase in firearm safety awareness among gun owners. Persistent reminders to properly store firearms, particularly in homes with children, continue through Project ChildSafe.

Privacy Of South Dakota Gun Owners Protected

Gov. Mike Rounds signed into law last Friday House Bill 1199, legislation that will prohibit the release of information concerning applicants and current concealed carry permit holders to any person, except for a law enforcement agency or the secretary of state. The law also prohibits any government official or entity from keeping any lists or records of privately owned firearms, firearm owners or holders of concealed carry permits.

Selection Match Determines U.S. World Cup Trap Team

The Spring Selection Match, the second of two matches used to determine the American contingent participating in trap shooting events at the ISSF World Shooting Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, from July 22-Aug. 5, concluded on Saturday at the Hill Country Shooting Sports Center in Kerrville, Tex. The 30 members of the Men’s and Women’s and Junior Men’s and Women’s trap teams have been announced by USA Shooting, the governing body for Olympic and international shooting sports in the United States. Matches held this week will determine positions on the double trap and skeet teams.

Connecticut Sunday Hunting Bill Omits Firearms

Senate Bill 605, presented by the Connecticut General Assembly’s Environment Committee, allows the state’s Department of Environmental Protection to designate areas that would be open to Sunday hunting on private property. The bill only applies to bowhunters, and the legislation, scheduled to be heard on Friday, would need an amendment to include firearms hunters.

Alberta Suspends Spring Grizzly Season

Alberta’s provincial Ministry of Sustainable Resource Development has announced a suspension of its spring grizzly bear hunt while DNA census data is collected, which will continue “over the next few years.” Minister Dave Coutts said, “While we pursue better grizzly bear population estimates, Alberta will take the most precautionary approach possible with the spring hunt.” Two experts from Montana universities will provide scientific peer review of the provincial Draft Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan.

A 2005 "Range Report" readership survey to club officers and managers of recreational shooting sports facilities gives insight to the importance this quarterly magazine has with decision-makers at ranges and clubs. With over 8,000 subscribers, the magazine's actual circulation is more than 30,000 readers, when you add staff, members, customers, club officers as well as friends and family who may read a copy of "The Range Report" while at their favorite range.

More Support For NHF Day

America’s two largest outdoor magazines, "Field & Stream" and "Outdoor Life," along with parent company Time4 Outdoors, have offered a sponsorship package for National Hunting and Fishing Day. Their support will help return the 34-year-old, federally recognized holiday to its early glory as the most successful sporting campaign in American history.

Interior Secretary Norton Resigns

Interior Secretary Gale A. Norton tendered her resignation, effective April 1, ending a tenure that began on Jan. 31, 2001. In a press release issued by the Department of the Interior, an excerpt from her letter of resignation cites her and her husband’s desire to achieve goals in the private sector, “closer to the mountains we love in the West.”
