Child Safety Lock Act Goes Into Effect

Starting today, April 24, licensed firearms retailers are required to provide a safety device to all handgun purchasers, as stipulated in The Child Safety Lock Act of 2005, which is Section 5 of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. ATF has notified all FFLs of the act and posted a notice on its Web site.

Firearm Dealer Pleads Guilty

The owner and operator of Newman’s Gun Shop in Osceola, Ind., last week pled guilty to making false, fraudulent and fictitious statements regarding multiple firearms transactions.

FFL Seminars In California, Florida And On DVD

NSSF and ATF are teaming up in California and Florida to offer FFLs free seminars on a number of issues. For those who aren't able to attend, a DVD seminar is available. The "Partnership for Progress" seminars, coordinated through the National Association of Firearms Retailers, focus on reducing the criminal misuse of firearms and provide guidance and education on the rules and regulations governing the sale and transfer of firearms.

Firearm Industry Requests Seat At Mayors' Summit

In a letter faxed today to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office, NSSF officially requested a seat at the table at tomorrow’s national mayors’ summit on illegal guns. Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel, said the firearm industry shares the mayors’ concerns about further reducing crime by keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.

IHEA Benefit Shoot

The International Hunter Education Association invites you to participate in its annual fundraiser shoot on June 6 and 7 at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas. The shotgun competition includes sporting clays, trap and skeet, and there is a separate Sportsman’s Challenge event. Blind Retailer Files Suit Against ATF

In February, ATF ordered Oregon firearms retailer Jay Bailey to cease firearms trade. The Mail Tribune reports that ATF asserted Bailey was licensed as a sole proprietor and had failed to obtain a new license when he incorporated his business Jay Bailey Antiques & Firearms.

IHEA Appoints New Executive Vice President

Gary Berlin, who recently retired from a quarter of a century of service to the Colorado Department of Wildlife, has begun a new career as leader of the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA). IHEA is the official organization representing the interests of state, provincial and federal hunter education coordinators and 70,000 hunter education instructors who teach approximately 750,000 students each year.

Halls Of Fame

Jonathan Hall, 18, and then his brother Joseph, 20, both of Carrollton, Ga., took the top spot in two of three men’s rifle events at the National Junior Olympic Championships held at the Olympic Shooting Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. On March 19, Jonathan claimed the Men’s Air Rifle championship. Two days later Joseph defended his Three-Position title. “We live to compete against each other,” Joseph said. “We are both looking towards making the Olympic Team in 2008.”

Utah Takes Collegiate Pistol Title

The “Shootin’ Utes” of the University of Utah won their first national championship when they fired 2103 out of 2400 during the 2006 U.S. National Collegiate Pistol Championships held at Ft. Benning, Ga., in mid-March. Finishing in second and third were the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Military Academy. The Military Academy did finish as the overall national champion, winning the Free and Air Pistol events.
