Bushmaster Firearms Sold

Dick Dyke, owner of Bushmaster Firearms, Inc., has sold his 28-year-old manufacturing company for an undisclosed sum. The sale was announced Thursday. The new owner is Cerberus Capital Management, L.P., a company that supplies military bases and provides logistical support for the military. Dyke, who will remain involved in the business as a member of the board of directors, said he sold Bushmaster, which did $65 million in business last year, for the good of the company, his family and the stockholders.

California Revisits Microstamping

Again this legislative session, California could become the first state to require semiautomatic handguns to include microscopic equipment for pressing an identifying mark into every bullet fired. A West Hollywood legislator has reintroduced the measure, which was defeated last year in the state senate. NSSF will once again oppose the measure using documents showing that microstamping is ineffective for crime investigators, costly for the public and needlessly burdensome for manufacturers.

72 Hours To Report Gun Theft, Or Else

A bill being considered by Connecticut lawmakers would make it a crime to fail to report the loss or theft of a firearm within 72 hours and could lead to criminal investigations of gun owners. The bill—HB 5818—has passed through a Public Safety and Security Committee. Connecticut firearm owners are urged to contact their state lawmakers in the House of Representatives (phone 860-240-0400) and Senate (phone 860-240-0500) and urge them to oppose the bill.

U.S, Army To Support Trailblazer Adventure Program

The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit has signed on as a supporter of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation’s Trailblazer Adventure Program. The partnership will allow Trailblazer participants to actually learn skeet, trap and double-trap shooting techniques from Army experts. The marksmanship unit joins NSSF and numerous other businesses and organizations in supporting the program, which exposes youths and families to shooting and other outdoor activities.

Pennsylvania Youth Hunting

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has given preliminary approval to regulations establishing its new Mentored Youth Hunting Program. If final approval is given at an upcoming meeting, mentored youth will be allowed to hunt groundhogs and squirrels in 2006, expanding to include deer and turkey in 2007. The program was authorized when Gov. Ed Rendell signed HB 1690 in late 2005, culminating a broad effort supported by Families Afield founders NSSF, National Wild Turkey Federation and U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance.

Conservation Leadership

“One of the most significant crises in conservation today is the approaching retirement of today’s top conservation leaders,” said Steve Williams, president of the Wildlife Management Institute.

Scholastic Clay Target Season Underway

Shotgun sports are gaining popularity among male and female youths, and there's no better evidence than the Scholastic Clay Target Program, NSSF's national shooting league now active in more than 35 states, with nearly 7,000 participants.
