No Gun Confiscation In Alaska During Future Crises

Reacting to the unlawful confiscation of firearms in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, Alaska has passed new “Emergency Powers” legislation that prevents government officials from imposing restrictions on lawful possession, transfer, sale, transport, storage, display or use of firearms and ammunition during a disaster emergency.

'Smart Gun' Needs Time, Money

Michael Recce, who dreamed up the concept of a pressure-sensor handgrip that would allow only the handgun’s owner to pull the trigger, says that development of a commercial model is slowed by time and money.

City Turns Over 'Sting' Information

The federal agency that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg insulted by calling it “asleep at the switch” will review whether the City of New York acted illegally in sending private eyes to make straw purchases at firearms dealers in several states, according to an article in Newsday.

Court Rejects Anti-Hunters' Challenge

A federal appeals court has rejected anti-hunting groups’ legal challenge of a Utah voter-approved measure that makes it more difficult to ban hunting via the ballot box. In 1998, Utah voters approved Proposition 5 requiring a two-thirds supermajority to pass hunting-related issues that may appear on future ballots.

Hunting Film World Premier

Hunting, long dominated by males, is becoming the passion of more and more women. “Dressed To Kill–Women Who Hunt,” a documentary by filmmaker Carol Wagner of Austin, Texas, reveals the motivations of women who defy stereotypes to pursue their passion. The film’s world premiere is June 8 in Oklahoma City, with subsequent showings at film festivals around the country. Funding was provided in part by the Hunting Heritage Trust, Browning, Leupold & Stevens, Federal Premium Ammunition and others. For more information, contact Wagner at womenwhohuntfilm@aol.com.

Vermont Acts Against Nuisance Lawsuits

If you don’t like the sound of gunfire, don’t move near a shooting range. That’s what Vermont’s legislature and governor are telling citizens via a new law meant to cut the growing number of nuisance lawsuits against ranges. The law specifies that people who live next to pre-existing shooting ranges and gun clubs cannot successfully sue over noise pollution complaints as long as those facilities are following all applicable state and local laws.

Youth Hunting Bills Move Forward

Two more states are advancing measures to remove unnecessary prohibitions against youth hunters. Tennessee’s bill authorizes the state Wildlife Resources Commission to create one-year, one-time-only permit allowing anyone 10 or older to postpone hunter education requirements in order to participate in a supervised hunt with a licensed adult.

Byrd Proudly Promotes Outdoor Lifestyles

Tracy Byrd, two-time honorary chair of National Hunting and Fishing Day and perennial country music hit maker, is continuing his very public support of outdoor lifestyles on his Web site's home page. Byrd promotes National Hunting and Fishing Day, the Sept. 23 event founded 35 years ago by NSSF and now housed at Wonders of Wildlife museum, as well as his involvement in archery tournaments and hunting-related fundraisers. Byrd's latest single, “Cheapest Motel,” is set for release in mid-June, while his new album "Different Things" will hit stores in September.

Bad Bills In California

Californians are being urged to contact their state legislators to oppose AB 2714 and AB 2728—two pending bills that seek to impose additional burdens on firearm and ammunition retailers and their customers. AB 2714 would prohibit ammunition sales unless the purchaser personally presents clear evidence of identity and age to the seller.

Training California Retailers

More than 150 firearm retailers in California received advanced training and education last week in special Partnership for Progress seminars sponsored jointly by NSSF and ATF. The seminars were held in Bakersfield and Anaheim. Topics included business conduct, record keeping, loss prevention, Don't Lie For the Other Guy and avoiding straw purchases, and more. For more information, visit the National Association for Firearms Retailers, a division of NSSF, at www.nafr.org.
