The 76,695 pounds of venison distributed in 2005 added to the seven-year contribution of 206 tons, or 1.6 million meals. For more information, visit the coalition’s Web site.

Canada Registry A 'Billion Dollar Boondoggle'

Following the Canadian auditor general’s confirmation that the net cost of the Firearms Centre created to administer that nation’s firearm registry has reached $1 billion, a British Columbia Wildlife Federation official called the registry a “billion dollar boondoggle” that not only “wasted more than one billion dollars, but failed to improve public safety.” Further, the official says the actual cost of the registry is probably closer to $2 billion.

Sportsmen's Caucus Denied

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has vetoed a bill that would have allowed state legislators to create a sportsmen’s caucus similar to those found in 28 other states. Backers said the bill would have allowed lawmakers to promote their love of hunting and fishing. Sanford argued the bill could have opened the door to corruption via gifts and contributions to political caucuses. Lawmakers may act to override the veto.
