First Shots A Big Success In Oklahoma

Following successful events in Massachusetts, Idaho and Arizona, NSSF's First Shots made a stop at H&H Gun Range in Oklahoma City last week. First Shots events are designed to offer newcomers a welcoming introduction to the safe, recreational use of handguns -- and offer ranges a way to attract enthusiastic new customers.

Rethinking Air Canada Fees

Based on a litany of complaints and a petition from sportsmen groups, the Canadian Transportation Agency has suspended Air Canada’s new $50 handling fee per checked firearm, reported in last week's Bullet Points. The suspension applies only to international flights for the duration of a review process, while the agency considers whether the fees are "just and reasonable."

Project ChildSafe Launches In Pennsylvania

Project ChildSafe continues to partner with state officials across the country, most recently with Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll. She recently announced a 44-day tour across Pennsylvania to distribute gun locks. Project ChildSafe has distributed 35 million safety kits, which includes cable-style gun locks and firearm safety messages to gun owners in all states.

Targeting Illegal Gun Buys In Baltimore

In Baltimore last week, ATF, NSSF and Maryland's U.S. Attorney launched a major campaign aimed at deterring illegal gun purchases in the city.

Families Afield Bill In Michigan

Young hunters in Michigan are one step closer today to enjoying America’s greatest outdoor tradition. A House committee last week unanimously passed SB 1105, which would create an apprentice hunting license allowing youths to hunt under adult supervision before completing hunter education coursework. The bill’s next legislative stop is the general assembly of the state House of Representatives. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, National Wild Turkey Federation and NSSF support the measure as part of the national Families Afield initiative.

Smith & Wesson Profit Surges, Record Revenue Reported

Smith & Wesson on Thursday reported a surge in fourth quarter profit and record revenue for the fiscal year. Net income for the fourth quarter was $4.2 million, or 10 cents per share, compared with $1.8 million, or 5 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

NSSF Launches Portal Web Site

A one-stop online resource for new or experienced hunters and shooters, HuntandShoot.org went live today, launched by NSSF. The site will grow steadily over time, but already features an impressive array of free services and conveniences for today’s recreational gun owner.

Shooting News In The Works

NSSF is the title sponsor of the Sportsman's Team Challenge, an annual three-gun shooting competition which concluded yesterday in San Antonio. Results will be reported in a future edition of Bullet Points, but the early headlines are good: Team participation in 2006 appears to have nearly doubled from 2005. NSSF also is a major sponsor of an annual benefit shoot for the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA). Also just concluded, the event reportedly topped $100,000 in revenue for IHEA. Stay tuned for details.

Bush Invites Americans To Get Outside

President Bush has proclaimed June as Great Outdoors Month. In a proclamation, Bush wrote, “Great Outdoors Month is an opportunity to celebrate and experience America’s natural splendor and renew our commitment to conserve our air, water and land.” Bush’s sentiment echoes NSSF’s STEP OUTSIDE program, which focuses on inviting Americans to enjoy traditional outdoor activities such as hunting, shooting and fishing.

Habitat For Waterfowl Production

Ducks Unlimited is reporting that waterfowl breeding and rearing habitat is improved and better than expected in many parts of Canada, but conditions in the U.S. remain spotty.
