No Retreat In Alaska

Governor Frank Murkowski has signed the NRA-backed Castle Doctrine bill that provides protection from criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits for citizens who defend themselves from criminal attack. Alaska becomes the tenth state to adopt such legislation.

A reporter for the Star Tribune, in Minneapolis-St. Paul, sought a shooting range experience, and in so doing discovered the passion of John Monson, owner and operator of Bill’s Gun Shop and Range stores in Circle Pines and Robbinsdale, Minn.

ATF Raids Gun Parts Business

KT Ordnance, the Dillon, Montana, manufacturer of gun parts, was raided by ATF on June 7. Owner Richard Celata told the Billings Gazette that he hasn't been charged with any crimes. He also explained that the gun parts he sells are close to finish but do not constitute gun kits that can be assembled into ready-to-shoot firearms. "There's no way to assemble this in any way that you can fire it. You have to actually do some machining," said Celata.

Brady Campaign: College Gun Clubs 'No Problem'

Student gun clubs and their growing presence on college campuses represent "absolutely no problem" to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Handgun Violence, reports CNS News. The gun-control group went as far as saying such groups will forever be a "passionate minority." Since 1997, the Leadership Institute's Campus Leadership Program (CLP) has partnered with conservative organizations, like Gun Owners of America, to help create hundreds of conservative student groups, 41 of which identify themselves as gun clubs.

Dove Hunters Can Make A Difference

The contribution that dove hunters make to the Texas economy is well documented—it fuels a $200 million state industry, generates $11 million annually in sales tax and creates 3,750 jobs. Texas Parks and Wildlife, however, is looking to dove hunters for another kind of contribution—answers—and that information can come through reports of leg-banded doves that are harvested. A decline in dove hunting, though not from sport hunting, makes calling the toll-free number on the tiny band all the more important, reports The Dallas Morning News.

DU Kicks Off Campaign

Ducks Unlimited and its foundation, Wetlands America Trust, has launched a huge campaign to preserve North American wetlands, with the goal of raising $1.7 billion over the next five years. The focus is on nine initiatives that will help DU restore and manage millions of acres of wetlands. Donors will be able to direct their gifts toward regions they are particularly concerned about.
