Boy Scout Council Creates First Shooting Sports Post

The nation's first Exploring Post to focus exclusively on the shooting sports was formed last week in Utah. The new post, part of the Great Salt Lake Area Boy Scout Council, will include NSSF's Scholastic Rifle Program, rimfire and centerfire rifle shooting, rimfire and centerfire revolver, semi-automatic pistol, skeet, trap, archery and activities with the Junior USA Shooting Team.

Governor Signs Illinois Bill, Pennsylvania Program Takes Effect

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has signed a new law creating the Illinois Apprentice Hunter License Program. The program will allow youngsters ages 10 to 17 to buy an apprentice license and go hunting with a licensed parent, grandparent or guardian prior to hunter education.

NSSF Names New Director of Public Affairs

NEWTOWN, Conn.―The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the shooting, hunting and outdoor industry, has named Ted Novin as its new director of public affairs.

NSSF has announced the search for an industry professional to fill a key position as director of retail partnerships. The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of five years experience in sporting firearms and ammunition industry, including retail experience, familiarity with all segments of firearms manufacturing, distribution and retail, excellent oral and written communications skills and proven marketing and public relations skills.

New York Times Tells of Novice in Pursuit of Carry Permit

The New York Times featured a first-person account of writer Ralph Blumenthal’s path to obtaining a concealed handgun license. His daylong course was presented at Hot Wells Shooting Range in Cypress, Texas. "I wanted to learn how to handle a gun and see what it took to be licensed to carry one," Blumenthal wrote. "In the end, and to my surprise, I learned about more than shooting," he added. "I learned about not shooting," referring to his orientation, which he declared as "clearly defensive."

Dakota Arms Files for Chapter 11

Firearms manufacturer Dakota Arms, of Sturgis, S.D., has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In a press release, the company described the action as being “in the best long-term interests of Dakota Arms’ customers, creditors and employees because is will allow the company to continue operating as it resolves its financial challenges.” Company officials are hoping that Dakota Arms will emerge from bankruptcy within a year, reports the Associated Press.

Massachusetts Mandates Course for New Hunters

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has signed legislation that now requires all new hunters to successfully pass a basic hunter education course as a prerequisite for purchasing a hunting license.
