America Represented by the Spirit of 76

USA Shooting, the national governing body for the Olympic shooting sports in the United States, has sent 76 of its finest athletes to Zagreb, Croatia, to compete in the 49th International Shooting Sports Federation World Shooting Championships. Plan to Restore Woodcock Numbers

A recipe for restoring declining woodcock populations to 1980 levels will soon be released, reports the Wildlife Management Institute. The Woodcock Conservation Plan calls for active management on public and private forestlands, and it will be kicked off with the administering of a Fish and Wildlife Conservation Grant to the WMI Woodcock Initiative to develop and evaluate technological tools for woodcock habitat improvements. The initiative proposes an innovative approach to help solve a regional shortage of young forests and shrubland habitats.

Grant Supports NSSF's Conservation Videos for Schools

The Pope and Young Club, a leading conservation-oriented organization that supports wildlife management educational programs, has given NSSF a grant of $1,000, renewing its long-standing partnership with NSSF in support of its conservation video programs distributed to schools.

New York City Passes Bills Affecting Retailers

Two New York City bills affecting retailers were passed by the city council Wednesday. One bill will make it illegal to purchase more than one gun every three months. Another bill will ban gun coloration kits, something Mayor Bloomberg admitted isn't a problem, but apparently decided to pass another unnecessary law while they were at it. Said Bloomberg: "… by banning real guns from being painted to look like toy guns, we're getting ahead of a very dangerous practice before it becomes a problem on our streets."

Outreach Opportunity

Building a brand? Seeking loyal, lifelong customers? Consider reaching out to an audience of young shooting enthusiasts by exhibiting at state or national competitions of NSSF's Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP).

SCTP Youth Makes Virginia History

Ryan Tribble, 15, a participant in NSSF's Scholastic Clay Target Program, became the first skeet shooter in Virginia history to hit 100 targets in four shotgun divisions -- 12 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge and .410 caliber -- all at the same event, reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch. When he hit the final target in the .410 class of the open skeet competition in Chase City, shooters young and old surrounded Tribble to congratulate him. At the recent SCTP National Skeet and Sporting Clays Championships in New York, Tribble hit 198 of 200 in skeet. His team finished in second place, one target shy of first.

Georgia Gun Shop Sues New York Mayor

A Smyrna, Ga., gun shop is suing Mayor Bloomberg for $400 million, reports the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The lawsuit claims the mayor organized an illegal and "nefarious" undercover sting on the Georgia business. A spokesman for the mayor called the suit a "public relations stunt." The suit follows Bloomberg's own headline-grabbing lawsuit against the shop, Adventure Outdoors Inc., and 14 other firearms dealers.

FFLs: Doing it Right

During a presentation at the National Firearms Law Review Seminar, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) indicated that in 2005 it had conducted 5,239 inspections of licensees.

Let Law Enforcement Do Its Job

When U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Chuck Rosenberg launches the Don't Lie for the Other Guy straw purchase deterrent program with representatives from NSSF and ATF tomorrow in Norfolk he'll also announce an indictment of 11 suspects in an alleged gun trafficking scheme where guns were illegally straw purchased in Virginia and sold illegally in New York City, according to a Virginian-Pilot news story.

House Judiciary Committee Expected to Vote on Pro-Gun Bills

Two bills supported by the firearms industry are expected to be voted on Wednesday by the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. HR 5092 represents a major advance in protecting the rights of FFLs, while HR 5005, the Firearms Corrections and Improvements Act, combines seven pro-gun initiatives into a single bill. Visit NSSF's online Legislative Action Center to learn more about the bills and to contact your representatives in support of them.
