Florida Joins Families Afield List

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has signed a bill creating additional hunting opportunities for youngsters, another vital new law inspired by the Families Afield initiative of the National Wild Turkey Federation, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and NSSF.

Looking for a Retraction

Robert Marcus, owner and operator of Bob's Gun Shop in Norfolk, Va., is exploring legal action against the Virginian-Pilot newspaper over an article which claimed the store sold "most" of the firearms involved in an alleged gun trafficking operation ("11 charged in Virginia-to-New York gunrunning scheme," July 22, 2006). Marcus is hoping the newspaper will print a retraction, asserting that the U.S. attorney's indictment made clear only two firearms were bought at his store, but fears damage to his business' reputation is already done. Bob's Gun Shop has been in business for 61 years.

The Penalty for Lying and Buying

"Don't buy it for the other guy and don't lie for the other guy, unless you're prepared to spend the next several years in a federal prison," said Chuck Rosenberg, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia at last Tuesday's press conference kicking off the joint NSSF-ATF program that helps deter illegal straw purchases.

New Home, New Era for the Grand

One of America's oldest, largest and most unique sporting events -- the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships -- will celebrate its 107th run next week in a new home. After more than 80 years in Vandalia, Ohio, the Grand will kickoff next Tuesday at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, Ill. The event, which pits thousands of trap shooters from around the globe, begins with two days of youth competition through NSSF's Scholastic Clay Target Program. More than 1,500 students from 5th through 12th grade have pre-registered.

Youth Shooting Program on the Rise

Overall participation is rising faster than a low-house target over station eight. NSSF's Scholastic Clay Target Program, which next week will complete its sixth season by crowning national trap champions, continues to enjoy incredible growth.

Jump Driven by Strong Ammo Sales

The firearm industry's best economic indicator shows that first-quarter 2006 gun and ammunition sales grew by 10.7 percent over the same period last year. Ammo sales drove the overall gain with a 32 percent increase.

New Management Policies for Refugees

Later this month three new policies will begin to serve as guidelines for the management of the National Wildlife Refuges, reports the Wildlife Management Institute.

Women Shooters Make the News

The rise in participation of women shooters across the nation is not escaping the notice of newspapers. The Boston Globe delivered a colorful insight to Ladies Night at the Manchester (N.H.) Firing Line shooting range, where the appeal of the activity is so popular with females that men are often closed out because of a lack of range availability.

Women are Concealing with Style

Some 50,000 women in Florida are authorized to carry concealed weapons, according to public records, reports the Palm Beach Post, but where and how they are concealing them is not so public. Actually, women carrying firearms have presented some style-setting opportunities, and national manufacturers are scrambling to fill the market niche.

Army Reservist Takes NRA Pistol Championship

The annual Camp Perry, Ohio, shooting matches have already produced a new pistol champion, U.S. Army Reservist SSG James Henderson, in a match that came down to the last five shots. Henderson, of Festus, Mo., and seven-time national champion Brian Zins of King George, Va., were within points of one another, but Henderson pulled out his first NRA National Pistol Championship, after several previous second-place finishes.
