Firearms Industry Comments on NYC Settlement with Gun Dealers

Sixteen-Year-Old Sets National Air Rifle Record

Nobody wants to have her record-setting performance erased from the annals, unless, of course, she is beating her own mark. That is exactly what happened at the 2006 edition of the Daisy Air Rifle Championship when 16-year-old Michaela Jochum from Beatrice, Neb., shattered her own 20-shot standing record of 185 with an incredible sporter score of 192. She finished the day with a 573 three-position total score to eclipse her old open record of 571, taking individual honors and leading her Homestead 4-H Club to victory in the sporter class team championship.

Americans Take Gold at World Championships

The U.S. took first place in the 50m Prone Riflemen's team event at the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. The three-man team was led by Spc. Michael McPhail of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit with a score of 597, followed by Naval Reservist Eric Uptagrafft, 595, and Olympic gold medalist Matt Emmons, 594. The competition concludes on Wednesday.

Feds May Expand Hunting Opportunities

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed adding or expanding hunting opportunities on seven national wildlife refuges. The proposals, impacting four states, were published in the Federal Register on July 24. A public comment period will end August 16. "We are committed to expanding hunting and fishing opportunities wherever we can," said agency director H. Dale Hall. In 2005, approximately 2.3 million Americans hunted on national wildlife refuges.

E-Duck Stamps

Congress has passed, and President Bush is considering, a bill that would create an electronic duck stamp and a new convenience for waterfowl hunters. A pilot program beginning Sept. 1, 2007, in 15 states would allow hunters to buy the prerequisite federal duck stamp electronically over the phone or Internet. Conventional paper stamps would remain available at retail outlets. Ducks Unlimited reports that waterfowl hunters have contributed over $600 million to habitat conservation through duck stamp purchases over the past 71 years.

Survey: Duck Population Up 14 Percent

Preliminary results from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey estimate a total duck population of more than 36 million, or a 14 percent increase from last year's estimate and 9 percent above the 1955-2005 average.

House Approves Ban on Confiscation During a Disaster

The U.S. House of Representatives, with a vote of 402-23, emphatically passed legislation to bar federal officials or federally funded local law enforcement from confiscating legally owned firearms during a natural disaster, reports the Times-Picayune. The bill's sponsor, Louisiana Congressman Bobby Jindal, said he wants to avoid a repeat of occurrences during Hurricane Katrina.

Izaak Walton League Joins NSSF

All 110 chapters of the Izaak Walton League of America that feature shooting ranges have joined the membership rolls of the National Association of Shooting Ranges (NASR) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).

Heritage Fund Scholarship Winners

Twenty-five students from 15 states have been awarded $1,000 scholarships through the Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund. The scholarship program assists employees of fund-member companies or family members of those employees.
