SCI Persuades Airline To Change Policy

SCI PERSUADES AIRLINE TO CHANGE POLICY . . . Hawaiian Airlines, at the request of Safari Club International, has overturned its policy prohibiting hunters from checking firearms as luggage on flights to the Sydney Airport in Australia. SCI President Dennis Anderson sent a letter of protest against the policy to Hawaiian Airlines. The airline responded by amending its policy "to allow passengers to check their firearms and ammunition in checked baggage consistent with United States and Australian laws and regulations.” International hunters, however, are always responsible for obtaining the proper authorization from the appropriate Australian authorities when traveling with firearms.

USA Shooting Names Athletes Of The Year

Two of America's top names in shooting, three-time gold medal winner Kim Rhode and 2004 gold medal winner Matt Emmons, have been named USA Shooting's Athletes of the Year. The athletes were selected based on a points system. Rhode, of El Monte, Calif., was the 2007 World Cup Santo Domingo Champion and set a world record in Women’s Skeet. She was also the 2007 Pan American Games Silver Medalist and 2007 National Champion in Women’s Skeet. Emmons, of Browns Mills, N.J., and Fairbanks, Alaska, recently secured two nominations to the 2008 Olympic Team following a two-year point selection system and a gold medal win in the Men’s 50m 3 Position Rifle event, as well as a silver in the Men’s Prone Rifle event at the 2007 ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup Final in Bangkok, Thailand. Also named were Discipline Athletes of the Year: Vincent Hancock, top male athlete in shotgun; Jamie Beyerle, tops in women’s rifle; and Keith Sanderson, men’s pistol. Eight State Groups To Meet At Shot Show

Firearms retailers from California, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey are invited to attend the State Retailer Association Meetings at the SHOT Show. Proposed anti-gun legislation, more stringent regulations, frivolous lawsuits, increased regulatory audits and negative publicity for law-abiding federal firearm licensees make for increased challenges to their business. NSSF and firearms retailers need to work together on these issues because without an organized response by FFLs their business climate will become even more difficult. Firearms retailers should make it a point to attend their state meeting to learn how to gain input into regulatory and legislative issues. Meetings will take place February 3 and 4 in room N236 located on the 2nd floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center. See the schedule for your state and mark the date. U.K. To Ban Imitaion Samurai Swords

The United Kingdom will be banning imitation Samurai swords. Under the proposals, the government will ban the import, sale and hire of Samurai swords beginning in April 2008. Anyone breaching the ban will face six months in jail and a £5,000 fine.

Majority In U.S. Poll Support Gun-Ownership Rights

According to a recent CNN poll, nearly two-thirds of Americans say they believe the Constitution guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. In all, 65 percent said they thought the Constitution ensures such an individual right, and 31 percent said it did not. The question had a sampling error of plus-or-minus 3 points.
