Free Seminars At the Shot Show

Seminars for retailers and a separate selection of seminars for law enforcement are being offered for free during the noon hour on the first three days of the SHOT Show. Grab a sandwich and come to the Convention Center meeting rooms. In addition, a Saturday afternoon, Feb. 2, seminar from 2-4 p.m. in Room N210 will focus on ATF/FBI-NICS Issues and Answers, presented by an expert panel. On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3, from 2-4, Glock, NSSF and the Tax & Trade Bureau will present a seminar on Firearms & Ammunition Excise Tax (FAET) in Room N211. Pre-registration is not required for any of these seminars.

Maine Records One Of Its Safest Hunting Seasons

Wildlife officials in Maine said 2007 turned out to be one of the safest years for hunters since record-keeping began in 1940, the Associated Press reports.

N.Y Times Rips Senators For Call To Lift Parks Carry Ban

The New York Times assailed 47 members of the U.S. Senate today for urging Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne to lift the ban on carrying firearms into national parks and wildlife refuges. Current law forbids the carrying of any firearm into a national park or refuge that is not unloaded, disassembled or stored in a locked case.

Exclusive Distributor

AcuSport Corporation, distributor of outdoor and shooting sports products, has announced it will be the exclusive distributor of products manufactured by Hartford-based U.S. Fire Arms Mfg. Co. (USFA). Under the agreement, effective January 7, 2008, AcuSport will distribute an extensive selection of USFA products, including The Original Rodeo, The New Rodeo II, The New Cowboy and The Single Action models.

Daisy Donation To Aid Youth Programs

The Youth Shooting Sports Alliance (YSSA) announced that Daisy Outdoor Products has established a generous product account donation from which the YSSA can supply BB-guns, air rifles and related equipment. Friend: Bloomberg Seriously Considering Presidential Run

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is seriously considering running for President and will make a decision in the next two months, a close friend of the mayor's told the New York Daily News. New York Republicans are thinking about abandoning Rudy Giuliani and his "tanking" presidential campaign and jumping on "the Bloomberg bandwagon," the Daily News reports.

D.C. Files Brief, Announces Legal Team in Gun-Ban Case

The Washington Post reports that the District of Columbia filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court that says Washington, D.C.'s ban on handguns is a reasonable restriction to prevent "tragic harms" brought by gun violence -- even if the Second Amendment affords an individual right to possess firearms. The brief was filed Friday as district officials introduced the legal team that will defend the law.

Background Checks Up 4.1 Percent in 2007

Data released by the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported a total of 11,177,335 for 2007, up from 10,036,933 reported by NICS in 2006. After a state-level adjustment, background checks showed an increase of 4.1 percent from 2006 to 2007. The increase coincides with an uptick in excise taxes reported by firearms and ammunition manufacturers, another key economic indicator for the firearms industry.

Shot Show Auction Bell Ring in New Year

Bidding is under way at GunBroker.com for this year's SHOT Show Auction. On the block are the 5,000,000th Ruger 10-22 donated by Sturm, Ruger & Co., the Ruger Studio and Baron Engraving; a gentleman's folding knife donated by William Henry Studio; and a custom Pennsylvania flintlock rifle offered for auction by the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. Proceeds from the sale of the 10-22 and folding knife will benefit the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, and the auction items have been facilitated by the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance. The sale of the flintlock will benefit the programs of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association.
