Scopes Legalized On Muzzleloaders In Nebraska

A victory in the campaign waged by the North American Muzzleloader Hunting Association has come with the 5-3 vote by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to legalize the use of a magnifying riflescope during the December muzzleloader season. This muzzleloader hunting organization has been active, not without controversy, in attempts to liberalize restrictive muzzleloader season regulations to embrace many of the industry's technological advancements.

Hunting Heritage Workshop Opens Annual Conference

A full-day workshop on how the North American model of wildlife conservation may be used to ensure the relevance of hunting today will be presented at the North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix, in Phoenix, Ariz. "The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation: Affirming the Role, Strength and Relevance of Hunting in the 21st Century" on opening day will be one of the many programs during the March 25-29 gathering that is themed, "Effective Conservation through Partnerships."

Conservation Program Reaches Million-Acre Milestone

Conservation groups and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency last week celebrated the enrollment of the 1,000,000th acre into the popular Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). A component of USDA's Conservation Reserve Program, CREP is a voluntary land retirement program that helps agricultural producers protect environmentally sensitive land, decrease erosion, restore wildlife habitat and safeguard ground and surface water. Gun-Rights Advocates Voice Discontent in D.C. Case

With the decision of the U.S. Department of Justice to call for, via a friend-of-the-court brief, the U.S. Supreme Court to send back to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that lower court's final ruling in the Washington, D.C. v. Heller case, firearms rights advocates have been loudly voicing their discontent. Of issue is the department's view that while the Second Amendment does protect an individual right, the case should go back to the lower court to apply a different standard of review. Massachusetts Committee To Hear Flawed Legislation

On Wednesday, the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security will be holding a public hearing on bills that will further erode the rights of law-abiding gun owners under the guise of reducing gun trafficking and gang violence. Cabela's Fights Back Against Cook County Ordinances

Citing the risk to jobs, families and tax revenue, Cabela's has joined the effort to stop the anti-industry and anti-gun ordinances proposed by members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. The proposed ordinances would ban the sale of firearms, certain accessories and ammunition. If enacted, these bans would threaten to put Cabela's and other retailers out of business. SHOT Show Event Updates

NSSF's 2008 SHOT Show is less than two weeks away. SHOT Show University, NSSF's full-day firearms retail education conference set for Feb. 1, is sold out -- with more than 250 signed up to attend. Tickets are going fast to NSSF's State of the Industry Dinner-Concert Gala, with guest performer Randy Travis. Ticket orders received after Jan. 21, and all international orders, will be held for pickup at the Will Call desk outside the Barron Ballroom, Las Vegas Hilton, beginning at 5 p.m. on Feb. 2. The deadline date for online orders is Jan. 28. Bidding continues at www.gunbroker.com in the annual SHOT Show gun and knife auction. The auction will conclude at noon on Feb. 5.

ATF To Add Manpower to Stop Illegal Guns Into Mexico

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) plans to add staff members, including 35 special agents and 15 industry operations investigators, to the southwest border. Project Gunrunner will also deploy eTrace technology in nine U.S. consulates in Mexico, announced officials, in efforts to prevent firearms from illegally getting into Mexico from the U.S.
