Budweiser Honors Conservationist

Lowell E. Baier of Potomac, Md., an avid outdoorsman, was honored as the 2008 Budweiser Conservationist of the Year at the annual Budweiser Outdoors press conference during the SHOT Show. A $50,000 grant from Budweiser and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will be made to Baier to support conservation efforts. Industry Celebrates $3 Billion Contribution to Conservation

Executives from America's leading firearms and ammunition manufacturers marked an important milestone at the SHOT Show. Since 1991, manufacturers have contributed more than $3 billion to fund wildlife conservation through the payment of a federal excise tax on the sale of their products. In recognition of this milestone, industry leaders presented a commemorative check for $3 billion to H. Dale Hall, director of U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Matt Hogan, executive director of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

Legislators of the Year

During its annual members meeting at the SHOT Show, NSSF named Nevada State Sen. John Lee (D-Clark 1) its Legislator of the Year. The award stems from Lee's sponsorship of SB 92, legislation that removed the requirement that firearms had to be pre-registered with the Clark County Sheriff's Office before they could be brought into Clark County. NSSF's National Association of Firearms Retailers (NAFR) honored Pennsylvania State Rep. Edward G. Staback (D-115) as the NAFR Legislator of the Year. Staback's leadership in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has helped to protect the livelihood of law-abiding firearms retailers throughout Pennsylvania.

Jim Carmichel Honored

NSSF and the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) honored veteran journalist Jim Carmichel during the SHOT Show's State of the Industry Gala. Carmichel, of Jonesborough, Tenn., was presented with the prestigious POMA/NSSF Grits Gresham Shooting Sports Communicator Award.

Nearly 2,000 Exhibitors Pack Las Vegas Convention Center

NSSF's 30th SHOT Show opened with a bang on Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The show, which runs through Tuesday, is larger than ever and is on pace to break all previous attendance records. Nearly 2,000 exhibitors spanning 715,000 square feet of space fill the convention center and three giant temporary structures outside the building. "We've come a long way since St. Louis," NSSF President Doug Painter told industry leaders at Saturday night's State of the Industry Gala, referring to NSSF's first SHOT Show in 1979. "Over the years, the SHOT Show has helped build the success of many individual companies in our industry. But most of all, the show has helped build a more successful future for all of us." During his address, Painter emphasized the importance of bringing new hunters and shooters into the fold to secure a strong future for hunting, shooting and the industry. Opening night also included speeches from key industry leaders, the presentation of awards and a performance from country music superstar Randy Travis.
