Manufacturers have since 1991 contributed more than $3 billion dollars to fund wildlife conservation through the payment of a federal excise tax on the sale of their products. The excise tax is a primary source of wildlife conservation funding in the United States. Since the inception of the excise tax in 1937, more than $5 billion dollars has been collected.Nevada State Senator John Lee Named NSSF 2007 Legislator of the YearLAS VEGAS -- The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association of the firearms industry, earlier today named Nevada State Senator John Lee (D-Clark 1) its Legislator of the Year. The award stems from Senator Lee's sponsorship of SB 92, legislation that removed the requirement that firearms had to be pre-registered with the Clark County Sheriff's Office before they could be brought into Clark County. The award was presented to Senator Lee at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show and Conference (SHOT Show), the largest and most comprehensive trade show for all professionals involved with the firearms, ammunition, shooting sports and hunting industry.Outdoor Channel Post Profit, Names Hunting Advisory CouncilOutdoor Channel reported third-quarter net income increased to $1.5 million, or 6 cents per share, compared with a loss of $5.3 million, or 21 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. The company credited the increase to advertising and subscriber-fee revenue. Revenue for the quarter rose 12 percent to $12.7 million, up from $11.3 million the previous year. The company also announced the formation of its 2008 Hunting Advisory Council.Winchester Ammo Sales, Profit Up In Fourth QuarterOlin Corp. (NYSE:OLN) said sales in its Winchester division were $102.7 million in the fourth quarter, compared to $93.3 million in the same period in 2006. Winchester's fourth-quarter profit was $2.7 million, compared to $2.6 million last year. The company said higher selling prices offset the impact of higher commodity and manufacturing costs and a less favorable product mix.Ammo Sales Help Boost ATK Profit; More Funding For Ammo PlantAlliant Techsystems (NYSE:ATK) reported strong performances in its ammunition and launch systems segments that helped boost net income to $58.3 million, or $1.65 per share, in the third quarter, compared to $51.2 million, or $1.53 per share, in the same period the previous year. Sales in its ammunition systems group increased by 15 percent to $381 million, compared to $331 million in the prior-year quarter. ATK also announced it has received an additional $52.2 million in funding to modernize and enhance its Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Mo.Tennessee Committee to Vote on Right to Hunt BillThe Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee will vote Tuesday on a bill (HJR 108) that would amend Tennessee's state constitution to guarantee Tennesseans the right to hunt. The Tennessee Wildlife Federation is encouraging the state's sportsmen to contact their Senators to express their support of the bill.Youth Hunting Bills Moving in Four StatesElected officials in four states -- Nebraska, Virginia, Indiana and Wisconsin -- are moving closer to enacting legislation lowering barriers that prevent the recruitment of new hunters, the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance reports. The effort is part of the Families Afield campaign of USSA, NSSF and the National Wild Turkey Federation.Aloha (Goodbye) Bullet Serialization BillHawaii legislation HB 2392, which would have banned ammunition by mandating bullet serialization, the process by which each individual round of ammunition is identified and marked with a laser-engraved serial number, was "deferred indefinitely" following strong opposition from sportsmen, gun-owners and firearms enthusiasts. Upon notification of the proposed bill, NSSF mobilized its forces and launched a statewide legislative action alert to residents. "The defeat of bullet serialization in Hawaii demonstrates the power of a strong grassroots lobbying campaign," said NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane.
