Measure Likely To Be Thrown Out

Last Tuesday, San Francisco voters approved an ordinance (Proposition H) that would ban the sale and manufacture of all firearms and ammunition in the city and county of San Francisco as well as the possession of handguns within city and county limits. The following day, the California Association of Firearms Retailers—which is affiliated with NSSF's retail division, the National Association of Firearms Retailers—joined the National Rifle Association in filing a lawsuit challenging the measure.

FEMA Reverses Policy

The Federal Emergency Management Agency today reversed a policy of prohibiting firearm possession in emergency evacuee trailer parks and other temporary housing provided by the agency. The issue came to the nation’s attention on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer when the opening of a “FEMA village” in Baker, La., following Hurricane Katrina was aired. The Second Amendment Foundation complained to FEMA officials, which led to a review by the agency’s legal counsel, who recommended the reversal.

Floridas Youth Hunting Program Seeks Support

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is seeking partners to help launch a Youth Hunting Program that seeks to increase the number of young hunters by providing quality outings for 12 to 17 year olds.

LaPierre Makes Hunting "Big Time" Winner

Outdoor columnist Len Lisenbee reported in the Canandaigua (N.Y.) Daily Messenger that Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, speaking on behalf of hunting, was the clear-cut winner in the Pay-Per-View debate conducted last week with Andrew Butler, the United Kingdom’s representative for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

American Woodcock Initiative Takes Flight

As the nation’s forestlands mature, and as farmlands and wetlands are lost to development, American woodcock continue to decline. To address the issue of loss of habitats important for woodcock and other high priority species, the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI) has assembled the largest public/private coalition ever created to proactively address habitat improvement for woodcock.

Ohio Bill Will Put More Hunters Afield

An Ohio bill designed to help increase the number of sportsmen in the field will be heard in a house committee Wednesday. The bill, Ohio HB 296, will create an apprentice hunting license that will allow qualified, licensed adult hunters to introduce others to hunting prior to completing a hunter education course.

Gun Ban Rejected

Brazilians rejected a proposal to ban guns in a national referendum Sunday, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. With more than 92 percent of the votes counted, 64 percent of citizens were opposed to the ban, while 36 percent backed it. The proposal would have prohibited the sale of firearms and ammunition except for police, the military, some security guards, gun collectors and sports shooters.

Bush Commends Congress On S. 397

President George W. Bush will put his signature on the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act on Wednesday, thereby blocking any future “junk” lawsuits attempting to hold firearms industry companies liable for the actions of criminals who misuse the industry’s lawful products.
