New Step Outside Alliance is First of Its Kind

The Alabama Hunting and Fishing Conservation Alliance is a loose-knit group comprising major hunting and fishing organizations in Alabama. It represents the first time a major state conservation alliance has been created anywhere within the United States that brings all the related organizations under one umbrella to work toward common goals to enhance the image of hunters and anglers, increase recruitment and retention of hunters and anglers, and increase hunting and angling opportunities in Alabama. The Alliance is comprised of the following 15 organizations:

  • Alabama Bass Chapter Federation
  • Alabama Dog Hunters Association
  • Alabama Chapter of Ducks Unlimited
  • Alabama Farmers Federation
  • Alabama Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation
  • Alabama Chapter of Quail Unlimited
  • Alabama Quail Hunters Association
  • Alabama Treasure Forest Association
  • Alabama Wildlife Federation
  • Bass Anglers Sportsman Society
  • Bow Hunters of Alabama
  • Buckmasters- American Deer Foundation
  • Coastal Conservation Association
  • Safari Club International
  • Wheelin’ Sportsmen – National Wild Turkey Federation

The Alliance held its first STEP OUTSIDE event on October 5-7, a field day for the Alabama-Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America plus other area troops. The council covers eastern Alabama and northern Florida and approximately 250 Scouts converged on the event site. For many of the youth it was the first real introduction to the outdoors in a true outdoor environment. They enjoyed introductory activities such as an introduction to quail and turkey hunting, bird dog training, safety, fishing lessons, creating wood duck boxes, and much more.
At the end of the day, the Scouts were presented with a special STEP OUTSIDE patch created for the Scouts by the Alliance and the Alabama Florida Boy Scout Council in recognition of their participation in the event. Scott Hill, field director of the Council, commented that “This was the first time many of the Scouts had an opportunity to experience traditional outdoor activities, and they loved it. The Alliance was very professional and presented a well-organized event. Many leaders are calling me and asking if we can do it again next year!”
The Alliance was so pleased with the outcome and support for the event that it plans to sponsor more of them. In fact, it serves as a pilot program for other states that are interested in achieving similar goals. If you would like more information about the Alliance, please contact Corky Pugh, director, at 334-242-3849.
