HCI Says More Gun Laws Vital For 'Homeland Security'

Handgun Control, Inc., now calling itself the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, is calling for more restrictions on firearm sales as part of the nation’s war on terrorism. In announcing its renewed push for more legislation, the group’s president, Michael Barnes, contends that terrorists can “buy firearms easily in the United States” and one “simple step that will solve this problem (is) requiring a criminal background check every time a firearm is sold.” The organization is trying to reinvigorate its campaign for more laws by citing several examples where foreign nationals with alleged ties to terrorist groups purchased firearms at gun shows. The suspects in each of the cases, however, were all arrested and convicted on various charges under existing laws because of ongoing investigations by authorities. This fact shows the current “system works,” said James Jay Baker, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. Baker told a New York Times reporter recently that the gun control group’s campaign was “a fairly crass attempt to bootstrap their agenda on the tragedy of Sept. 11.”
