Youth Hunting Program Featured On CNN

United States Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) Senior Vice President Rick Story appeared on “Paula Zahn NOW” to promote the Families Afield Program, which will aid in the recruitment of new hunters to the sport. The program was launched by the USSA, National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) after research showed that age restrictions on hunting result in fewer hunters in the field.

During the Dec. 1 program, Story explained that the greatest obstacle to hunter recruitment is age restrictions for hunting. He said that such limitations are arbitrary and that the decision whether to allow a child to hunt should be made by the parents, not the government.

The Youth Hunting Report, research funded by NSSF and NWTF and compiled by the USSA and Silvertip Productions, shows that youngsters are less likely to take up hunting in states that have the most restrictive requirements for youth participation. However, states that removed barriers to youth hunting have a much higher youth recruitment rate.

The report also demonstrates that young hunters supervised by adult mentors have one of the lowest injury rates of all hunters. Supervised young hunters are the safest even in states that don’t restrict hunting based on age.
