Wonders of Wildlife Opens New Exhibit for National Hunting and Fishing Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—President Nixon's original proclamation, a letter of support from President Ford, and declarations from two different presidents named Bush.

An historic timeline of hunters' and anglers' unprecedented role in conservation.

All this, plus 35 years worth of other National Hunting and Fishing Day memorabilia, is now on exhibit or archived at Wonders of Wildlife, the National Fish and Wildlife Museum and Aquarium, in Springfield, Mo. The museum recently unveiled a new exhibit commemorating the annual celebration.

The exhibit reinforces the ties between hunters, anglers and conservation. Through the years, America's unique system of conservation funding has proven to be the world's most successful model for managing fish, wildlife and habitat.

Wonders of Wildlife is the official home of National Hunting and Fishing Day, which is set to mark its 35th anniversary on Sept. 23.

"For more than three decades, the fourth Saturday in September has been the centerpiece of an ongoing effort to help America understand what hunters and anglers do for conservation," said Tony Schoonen, executive director of Wonders of Wildlife. "Our new exhibit is a tribute to everyone who's been a part of that effort, from world leaders and celebrities down to the average guy who simply takes the time to explain to his neighbor how hunting and fishing license dollars contribute to conservation."

Formalized by Congress in 1971, National Hunting and Fishing Day once saw legions of hunters and anglers volunteering time in shopping center exhibits and other public venues, explaining America's sportsman-based system of conservation funding. Today that system generates more than $1.7 billion a year, benefiting all who appreciate wildlife and wild places.

Wonders of Wildlife is the only hunting- and fishing-focused facility that's both affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution and accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.

Partners in a new campaign to reenergize National Hunting and Fishing Day include the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which founded the annual commemoration, The Outdoor Channel, Bass Pro Shops, Realtree, Woolrich, "Outdoor Life" and "Field & Stream" magazines, National Wild Turkey Federation, Gunbroker.com, and the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. More partners are expected to come on board to help unify America's hunters and anglers into the cohesive force that hallmarked early years of the celebration.

President George W. Bush recently acknowledged the importance of the day, as well as Wonders of Wildlife, in a special video release that can be seen at www.nhfday.org.

Country music star Tracy Byrd has been named honorary chairman for National Hunting and Fishing Day 2006. Byrd also served that role in 2005.
