Weekend Wraps Up Junior Olympic Championships

Elisha LaFond, Spokane, Wash., and Shannon Wilson, Fairfax, Va., earned champion status at the 2006 Junior Olympic National Championships held March 25-28 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and then the Men’s and Women’s pistol matches on March 30-April 1 put the finishing touches on two weeks of intense competition. LaFond, on the National Development Rifle Team for less than a year, took the top spot in Women’s 10mm air rifle, with a total score of 886.0. Wilson, who considered herself more proficient in air rifle competition, surprised herself with a 1,251.6 total in Women’s three-position rifle and won the championship by seven points. The final events were highlighted by commanding victories in the Women’s 25m sport pistol and air pistol events by 15-year-old Heather Deppe of San Antonio, Texas, and by wins by Nicholas Budnella of Colorado Springs in Men’s air pistol on his home range and by Floridian Tucker Stachitas in the Men’s 50m free pistol event.
