USSA To Defend New Jersey Bear Hunt In Court

(Trenton) - The nation’s leading sportsmen’s rights organization will once more be heading to a New Jersey courtroom in defense of bear hunting.

On Dec. 1, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation (USAAF) and its Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund (SLDF), along with two individual sportsmen, filed a motion with the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division, to intervene in the lawsuit filed by anti-hunters to stop the New Jersey bear hunting season. The season is scheduled to begin on Dec. 5.

The request came one day before oral arguments in the case, filed by two anti-hunting groups on Nov. 28, were to begin. The anti-hunting groups contend that the black bear management plan composed by the New Jersey Fish and Game Commission and approved by Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bradley Campbell is flawed and invalid.

“The USSAF has been in the fight for bear hunting in New Jersey since the beginning,” stated Rob Sexton, vice president for government affairs for the USSA. “We have a responsibility to New Jersey sportsmen to ensure that their interests are represented in the court.”

In 2003, the SLDF filed a motion to intervene on behalf of New Jersey sportsmen in a similar suit filed by anti-hunting groups to stop the bear hunting season in that year. Their request was granted and the SLDF led the defense of the bear hunting season, ultimately resulting in a successful season.

In 2004, no bear hunting season was held.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund is the nation’s only litigation force that exclusively represents sportsmen’s interests in the courts. It defends wildlife management and sportsmen’s rights in local, state and federal courts. The SLDF represents the interests of sportsmen and assists government lawyers who have little or no background in wildlife law.
