U.S. To Expand Bird Flu Testing

The U.S. government plans to test nearly eight times as many wild birds this year for a deadly strain of bird flu, reports USA Today. Samples from 75,000 to 100,000 birds – compared to 12,000 since 1996 – will be tested for the virus this year. Testing will take place mainly in Alaska, but other testing areas include the Pacific islands and the West Coast. The effort is aimed at monitoring migrating birds that could carry the virus, which has spread across Europe and Asia, to North America. Russia has said it will ban bird hunting this year because of the country's growing bird flu pandemic.
