U.N. Panel Approves Draft Resolution on Arms Trade Treaty

The United States last week was the only nation to vote against a United Nations committee's draft resolution on creating an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The draft, aimed at establishing international standards in the trade on conventional arms, was approved 139-1 (with 24 abstentions) by the U.N.'s First Committee, which deals with disarmament and international security. The resolution will form a group of governmental experts to look at the feasibility of an ATT. The United Kingdom was the champion of this initiative, which was masterminded by the anti-gun International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) and echoed by their sister organizations Oxfam and Amnesty International. Said Jennifer Nordstrom of another radical group, Reaching Critical Will, "The ATT could regulate the trade in conventional weapons -- from tanks to shotguns."
