Trailblazer Hosts Heading to Shotgun World Championships

Six members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Shotgun team are one step closer to become the best in the world. These expert marksmen are also introducing the next generation to shooting sports through the Trailblazer Adventure Program.

The six members of the Fort Benning, Georgia-based unit that have qualified to be representatives on the World Championship Shotgun Team include Sgts. 1st Class Joetta R. Dement, Theresa E. DeWitt and Shawn C. Dulohery, Staff Sgt. William H. Keever, Spc. Matthew T. Wallace and Pfc. Joshua M. Richmond. Besides being some of the best shots in the world, the group is also volunteering time and expertise to introduce youth to shooting sports during the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation Trailblazer Adventure Day slated for August 26 at Ft. Benning.

“Trailblazer partners such as the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit give young people an opportunity that most people never get a chance to experience in their lifetimes,” said Derrek Shively, USSAF associate director of education. “Youngsters are gaining one-on-one training from some of the best shots in the world. It is a tremendous opportunity for youth and adults alike.”

One of the six World Championship Team members, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn C. Dulohery, is in charge of the planning and operation of the Trailblazer Adventure Day. He recently won the National Championship in Shotgun class.

The Trailblazer Adventure Program, a program of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation (USSAF), is designed to expose families to outdoor activities and promote an outdoor lifestyle. Hundreds of Scouts and their families will participate in the upcoming Trailblazer Adventure Day.

The USSAF Trailblazer Adventure Program has been honored with the Take Pride in America® award by the Dept. of Interior for its leadership in recruiting youth and families to the experiences of hunting and fishing and for teaching them about outdoor activities and conservation. The USSAF is one of the Take Pride in America Charter Partners, who work to improve public lands, historic sites and other recreation areas.

Trailblazer is endorsed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) STEP OUTSIDE Program and NSSF is a major sponsor. Corporate sponsors include Bushnell Performance Optics, Cabela’s, Charles Daly, North Fork Bancorporation, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and The Outdoor Channel. Additional support comes from the William H. Flowers Jr. Foundation.

The USSAF also works in partnership with the Boy Scouts of America; Bowfishing Association of America; Foundation for North American Wild Sheep; Fur Takers of America; International Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies; Kentucky Fur Takers Association; Masters of Foxhounds Association of America; National Wild Turkey Federation chapters; Ohio Division of Wildlife; Safari Club International, NY Tri-State Chapter; Shikar Safari Club International Foundation; West Virginia Division of Natural Resources; state wildlife agencies and local sportsmen’s clubs to make the program a success nationwide.
