Targeting Illegal Gun Purchases

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue made it clear at last Thursday’s Atlanta press conference launching Don’t Lie for the Other Guy: “Many straw buyers are acting for personal profit and know perfectly well that they are breaking the law. Some may act out of a naïve desire to help a buddy. But regardless of motive, the results are the same – a gun in the hands of a felon who shouldn’t have it.” The governor, ATF Director Carl Truscott, U.S. Attorney for Georgia’s Northern District David Nahmias and Larry Keane, senior vice president and general counsel for NSSF, explained the joint ATF-NSSF program that educates firearms retailers in how to deter illegal gun purchases and warns the public about the consequences of buying a gun for someone who cannot legally possess one.
