Step Outside, Wonders of Wildlife Strengthen National Hunting and Fishing Day Events

NEWTOWN, Conn.―If you can't STEP OUTSIDE®, the next best thing is stepping inside at Wonders of Wildlife, the National Fish and Wildlife Museum and Aquarium in Springfield, Mo.

The museum―92,000 square feet featuring over 225 species of live animals in realistic habitats―is the only hunting- and fishing-focused facility that's both affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution and accredited by the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums. And it's the official home of National Hunting and Fishing Day.

Wonders of Wildlife also is the newest official partner of STEP OUTSIDE, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) program that encourages outdoors enthusiasts to introduce newcomers to traditional outdoor activities. STEP OUTSIDE will reach its 500,000th new hunter, shooter, angler or archer sometime this year, making it one of the most effective recruitment initiatives in the past decade.

As official partners, STEP OUTSIDE will team with Wonders of Wildlife to strengthen a fast-growing list of local, open-to-the-public National Hunting and Fishing Day events.

"Over the years, STEP OUTSIDE has developed a variety of resources to help plan and promote events, and our materials and expertise are now available to assist Wonders of Wildlife as it builds a network of celebrations for National Hunting and Fishing Day," said Melissa Schilling, who coordinates STEP OUTSIDE for NSSF.

The new National Hunting and Fishing Day event-planning kit now includes STEP OUTSIDE materials. Wonders of Wildlife and STEP OUTSIDE also will cross-promote events perfect for introducing someone new to the world of hunting, shooting, fishing and conservation.

NSSF, which founded National Hunting and Fishing Day in 1971, is celebrating its 45th birthday in 2006. The organization recently reached important new milestones, topping 3,000 members and hosting the largest annual trade show (SHOT Show) in the history of the firearms industry.
