Sportsmen's Action Crucial To Help Stop "Ballot Box Biology" In Missouri

A bill that would hamstring anti’s efforts to ban hunting via the ballot box has seen committee action in the Missouri legislature, but needs continued sportsmen’s support to advance.

House Joint Resolution 43 was heard in the House Committee on Conservation and Natural Resources on Feb. 15. The bill will place a question before Missouri voters asking them to require all initiatives concerning the harvesting of birds, fish, game, wildlife or forestry resources that appear on future ballots to be passed by a two-thirds majority.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Mike Dethrow, R-Alton, provided testimony during the hearing. Numerous agricultural and conservation groups also spoke on behalf of the legislation. Opponents, led by the Sierra Club, were also on hand to try to derail the bill.

For almost 30 years, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance has battled the anti-hunting movement when it has brought its fight to the ballot box. In this case, placing wildlife issues on the ballot would ignore the Missouri Department of Conservation’s authority to scientifically manage wildlife. Increasing the necessary vote to two-thirds majority on wildlife-related issues will help protect the state’s resources.

Take Action! Sportsmen should contact their representatives and the Speaker of the Missouri General Assembly, Rod Jetton, R-Marble Hill. Ask them to support HJR 43 and encourage a committee vote.
