Sportsmen Fear Federal Budget Provision Could Harm Hunting

Several sportsmen’s organizations are concerned that terms in a budget bill could result in large-scale privatization of public land and lead to the degradation of quality hunting and fishing opportunities.

Hunters and anglers are troubled by a rider in the U.S. House of Representatives budget bill, HR 4241, which would allow private interests to buy and develop government lands. There is fear that this could result in “development, fragmentation, habitat loss and potential pollution.”

The House approved HR 4241 on Nov. 18. The Senate version of the bill does not include the land-sale provision. The differences will be worked out next month in conference committee.

Congressman Richard Pombo, R-California, chairman of the House Resources Committee, which produced the land-sale proposal, said that he will make sure the conference committee includes language preserving prime hunting and fishing opportunities.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance will work with Congressman Pombo to assure that adequate protection is provided for hunting, fishing and trapping.
