San Francisco Sets Penalties For Gun Ban Violations

Proposition H, a disputed ban on handgun possession by San Francisco residents and on the sale, manufacture and distribution of all firearms and ammunition in the city, has been challenged by a lawsuit filed by the NRA, the California Association of Firearms Retailers and others. While a San Francisco Superior Court Judge has until June 19 to decide on the merits of the case, the ban is not being enforced. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors, nonetheless, has established penalties for violation of the ban, which was approved by voters last fall. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the board last Tuesday approved the punishment for a first offense to be $1,000 and a possible jail term. A necessary second and final vote on the proposal is scheduled for this week.
