Ringling Brothers Circus Sued By Antis

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is in the line of fire by the anti’s. This time it’s over alleged poor treatment of elephants used in its shows.

A coalition of anti’s including the Animal Welfare Institute and the Animal Protection Institute, is currently suing Feld Entertainment, the owners of the circus. The case, which opened on October 27, claims the circus is violating the Endangered Species Act (ESA) through its “cruel” treatment of elephants. The anti’s are openly proclaiming that they hope to use this case as a legal precedent to pursue action against other groups utilizing animals even for entertainment.

Meanwhile, an assistant director at PETA offered to purchase a fully animatronic elephant if Ringling Bros. stops using live ones in its shows. According to PETA, the electronic elephant would be similar to the animatronic dinosaur featured in the highly popular show "Walking With Dinosaurs, the Live Experience” and would still offer children a fun time under the Big Top.
