Project Homesafe Gains Kudos on Nationwide Tour

The NSSF’s award-winning firearm safety education campaign, Project HomeSafe, continues to gain momentum and praise as it makes its way through participating states with mobile safety classrooms offering free firearm safety kits that include cable-style gun locks and safety brochures. Working with lieutenant governors and various state law enforcement agencies, the campaign is currently traveling through Indiana, Kansas and Arizona where 140,000 kits and locks will be distributed. In announcing the program in Indiana, Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan stressed the importance of Project HomeSafe in “helping to keep our families – particularly our children – safe. I would like to thank the program’s organizers for their leadership and their commitment to increasing gun safety awareness.” Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer of Kansas echoed those sentiments, calling Project HomeSafe “an outstanding program dedicated to making homes safer for families and, particularly, children,” as the campaign toured his state in partnership with the Kansas Highway Patrol. Arizona Secretary of State Betsey Bayless was emphatic in her endorsement of the program. “Everyone talks about gun safety, but the only solution they offer is more laws. There are plenty of laws on the books today, and tragedy still occurs. A lot of people talk; I believe in taking action. That is why I have partnered with Project HomeSafe to provide the necessary tools for responsible gun owners to safely secure firearms. I believe that education is the key to gun safety. Viable solutions as offered by Project HomeSafe can make a difference,” Bayless said. A recent editorial in the Albuquerque Tribune also heaped praise on the safety program. “Project HomeSafe, which recently visited Albuquerque and Rio Rancho . . . deserves a 21-gun salute,” the paper said in urging other New Mexico communities to embrace the campaign. The program “is performing a valuable, probably life-saving public service,” the paper wrote. Even those who are not generally seen as supportive of gun ownership are applauding the safety education effort. U.S. Congresswoman Julia M. Carson (D-IN) recently took to the floor of the House of Representatives, telling her colleagues, “I rise tonight to give special honor to Project HomeSafe and their latest firearm safety initiative . . . .”
