President-Elect Obama’s Secretary of the Interior

With the election now determined, speculation is mounting as to who president-elect Barack Obama is considering for key Administration positions. According to the insider political journal, the Politico, U.S. Representative Jay Inslee (D- WA) and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are in the mix to serve as the next Secretary of the Department of the Interior.

For sportsmen, there is no position in the federal government that will have more impact upon them for the next several years than Secretary of the Interior. The Secretary of the Interior oversees key conservation agencies like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

While Kennedy’s name is referred to for appointment to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) according to other reports, he would bring to the Department a long history within the environmental movement. He is considered one of the leading environmental lawyers in the country and was a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Counsel, one of the nation’s largest environmental action groups. The name of Rep. Inslee raises some flags as he was one of the prime sponsors of efforts backed by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to prevent Americans from importing polar bear trophies coming from healthy populations in Canada.

The USSA is optimistic that whether the next Secretary of the Interior is Kennedy, Rep. Inslee, or another candidate, they will take the time to learn all of the facts about effective, sustainable wildlife management and the pivotal role played by sportsmen in the process.
