President Bush declares June “Great Outdoors” Month President Bush urges Americans to visit and enjoy the great outdoors during the month of June. Bush said in a proclamation May 30 that during “Great Outdoors Month our nation should celebrate the grandeur of our open spaces, strengthen our commitment to preserving this heritage, and reaffirm our dedication to protecting air, water, and land.” Bush also stated that Great Outdoors Month is a chance “to honor those who work to keep our natural places beautiful and celebrate our country’s favorite Outdoor activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.” Bush first declared June Great Outdoors Month in 2004, and has done so every year since. The presidential proclamation prompted numerous state governors to follow suit.
