Pennsylvania Holds Signing Ceremony To Celebrate Families Afield

In a symbolic signing ceremony, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell proudly demonstrated his support of efforts to help boost falling sportsmen’s numbers. Pennsylvania recently became the first state to pass Families Afield legislation.

Gov. Rendell officially signed HB 1690 on Dec. 22, 2005, authorizing the Pennsylvania Game Commission to create a mentored youth hunting program. To mark the enactment of this historic legislation, the governor held a signing ceremony on Jan. 27 to help further educate the public about the new program and help promote Families Afield in other states.

Rob Sexton U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) vice president for government affairs was present for the signing and celebration. Joining him were representatives from the USSA’s partners in the Families Afield initiative. Rob Keck, CEO of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and NWTF board member Ron Fretts were on-hand, as was Chris Dolnack, senior vice president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). Also attending were Melody Zullinger representing the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and Thomas Baldrige representing the National Rifle Association.

House Bill 1690 was a raging success in the Pennsylvania legislature. The bill had overwhelming support in the House of Representatives and unanimous support in the Senate.

“Pennsylvania sportsmen can be proud of their legislators today,” said Rob Sexton. “The advancement of House Bill 1690 and the support it received showed us that Pennsylvania is dedicated to continuing the important role hunting plays in their heritage.”

The signing was held at the Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen’s Club in North Versailles, Pennsylvania.
