PETA Making an "Ass" of Itself Again

Because of an email from an animal rights group, a school board in Pennsylvania is being asked to cancel an upcoming donkey basketball game and to ban the use of animals during any entertainment event.

Pat Kelley, the Superintendent of the Northwestern school district, was contacted by PETA after it had learned of a “donkey basketball” game that was intended as a fundraiser. The game, in which participants play a game of basketball while riding on donkeys, was to raise around $2,000 for the Northwestern High School girl’s basketball team.

While Kelley has indicated that he was not opposed to the game and made clear no harm came to the donkeys during the November 8 engagement, he has been quoted in media accounts as saying, "when you get notified by a national organization, you have to respond to it. You can't just blow it off." PETA went on to praise the effort of Kelley to raise the issue at the upcoming school board policy meeting to be held later this month.

Meanwhile, another Pennsylvania school board, in nearby Girard, was also approached by PETA to ban a similar fundraising game of “donkey basketball.” The Girard High School principal, Greg McClelland, has indicated that while he plans to raise the issue with the school board, he is not asking for a policy change.
