No Lie: 'Don't Lie' Valuable In Combating Illegal Gun Sales

While New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is busy making headlines -- and refusing the firearms industry's request to help -- the National Shooting Sports Foundation and ATF's "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" program is helping gun dealers across the country combat illegal straw purchases. A New York Daily News story last week highlighted the value of the program, detailing a videotaped attempt by a private investigator to make a straw purchase from a Georgia retailer. After realizing the sale was potentially a straw purchase, the dealer pointed out the "Don't Lie" signs prominently displayed in his store and refused the sale. The store was one of many visited during a recent "Don't Lie" campaign in Georgia. The video is available for viewing through the mayor's Web site, along with footage of another dealer allegedly making an illegal sale. So far this year, Don't Lie for the Other Guy campaigns have been launched in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. The program has visited dealers throughout those states and supplied materials helpful in identifying and deterring straw purchases. Television and radio public service announcements have been aired by stations statewide.
