New York Bills Ease Restrictions On Youth Hunting

Companion New York bills seek to restore the ability of young hunters and shooters to legally possess and fire handguns that are registered to a licensed adult.

Assembly Bill 1536, sponsored by Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte, D-Niagara Falls, and SB 2742, sponsored by Sen. Dale Volker, R-Depew, allows young people between 14 and 20 to obtain junior firearm licenses. The license will permit an individual to participate in hunting, target practice, training and shooting competitions under the supervision of a parent, guardian, shooting coach or certified firearm instructor.

“In 2000, New York banned the use of pistols by all persons under age 21,” said Tony Celebrezze, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance director of state services. “These bills would ease that restriction and allow young people’s involvement in hunting and shooting opportunities with adult guidance.”

Studies including the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation’s Youth Hunting Report show that supervised young hunters are statistically the safest in the field. New York children should have the opportunity to participate in pistol hunting and shooting, which are safe, wholesome sporting activities.

Assembly Bill 1536 awaits debate in the Assembly Codes Committee. Senate Bill 2742 was approved by the Senate Codes Committee by a vote of 16 to 0 and will soon be voted upon on the Senate floor.

Take Action! New York sportsmen should ask their assembly members to support AB 1536 and their senators to support SB 2742. Let them know these bills provide opportunities for young people to safely enjoy hunting and shooting.
